Dental bridges are generally used to replace one or more missing teeth. How are dental bridges made?

Fixed dental bridges are fabricated by taking an impression of the adjacent teeth, which will serve as abutments, and creating a pontic in between. The pontic can be made from gold, alloys, porcelain, or a combination of these materials and is attached to the dental abutments with special cement.

Fixed bridges are cemented into place and can only be removed by a dentist. Removable bridges (also called partial dentures) have clasps that attach to the adjacent teeth and can be taken out for cleaning.

What are dental bridges made from?

Most typical dental bridges are made from porcelain fused to metal (PFM), all porcelain or all ceramic. Here is a little more about each to help you make the right choice:

  • PFM bridges. Porcelain fused to metal bridges is the most popular type of bridge and can be matched to the color of your natural teeth. The metal under the porcelain is usually hidden at the gum line. PFM bridges can last 10 to 15 years with proper care.
  • Porcelain or ceramic only bridges. All porcelain bridges are entirely made of porcelain and are popular because they look very natural. They can last ten years or longer with proper care.
